Active and Pain Free Aging with The MELT Method
Jul 31, 2024I’ve been a MELT Method™ Instructor since 2013. I can honestly say MELT has changed my life and the lives of my clients. MELT is a simple and gentle self-treatment method that hydrates your connective tissue (think fascia) and helps to rebalance your nervous system. It enhances mobility, stability and performance and is clinically proven to reduce chronic pain. It is not exercise, foam rolling, stretching or myofascial release. I don’t use MELT to replace anything, I use it in conjunction with my exercise and other self-care techniques. Let’s dive in to learn a bit more about this incredible technique that will empower you to take better care of yourself, stay active and pain free.
Why The MELT Method™ is Different from Foam Rolling and Stretching
Foam rolling has been around a long time. It has been used for self-massage, to “mash” tissue and for myofascial release. MELT is none of those things. MELT is very specific and deals with your connective tissue. Connective tissue is the extracellular matrix. This is a three-dimensional network of proteins (think collagen) and other molecules that surround and support cells and tissues in the body. Think of a sponge. When a sponge gets dried out, it doesn’t move or absorb fluid, but when you compress the sponge under running water, it becomes soft, pliable and absorbent. This is similar to what we do to our connective tissues when we MELT.
How MELT Works to Keep You Pain Free-The Four R’s of MELT™
The MELT Method was created by manual therapist Sue Hitzmann. Sue is the New York Times bestselling author of The MELT Method. Anyone can learn to MELT. The four R’s of MELT are Reconnect, Rebalance, Rehydrate and Release. Sue created the MELT Soft Foam Roller and MELT Foot and Hand Therapy Balls so that everyone can do their own “Hands Off Therapy.” ™ This gives you control over how and when you take care of yourself. If you’re having trouble sleeping, MELT. If your neck or lower back hurt, MELT. Plantar fasciitis? Trigger finger? Hip or knee pain? MELT. MELT doesn’t “fix” anything, it helps bring your body back into balance. Your body wants to heal itself. With the proper care you can help your body reduce or eliminate chronic aches and pains.
- Reconnect techniques heighten the mind-body connection. This is a vital component of your body’s daily repair and healing function.
- Rebalance techniques help with whole body balance, grounding and organ support.
- Rehydrate techniques restore the fluid state of the connective tissue. This helps your joints, muscles, organs and cells of the body. These techniques also help to decrease inflammation in the joints and improve the nutrient absorption of your cells.
- Release techniques help to decompress your neck, low back, spine, hands and feet. Decompressing your joints will help you stay mobile and pain free.
Easy Ways to Get Started
To make learning MELT simple we use the same terms and order of techniques. You will learn Position Point Pressing, Gliding, Shearing and Rinsing. The very first thing you will learn when MELTIng is the Soft Ball Foot and Hand Treatments and the Rebalance Sequence. I recommend learning these three sequences and performing them consistently for two weeks, then start adding in more techniques. You can choose the way you want to learn.

Self-Care That Will Keep You Feeling Young
Caring for oneself can help prevent disease, injury, pain, anxiety and depression. Your connective tissue is the most abundant tissue in your body. This means keeping it hydrated and healthy is critical. Up until about 30 years ago we didn’t think of connective tissue as a system but rather the packing material around our muscles, bones, joints and organs. We now know that our connective tissue is so much more than that. It is what makes up our bones, tendons and skin. It’s what keeps our organs protected and our eyes in place. It is in and around every aspect of our body. When it becomes dehydrated, stiff and sticky, pain, dysfunction and disease can occur. Self care, specifically The MELT Method, will help you feel less stiff and achy while helping to keep the tissues that make up your body healthy and hydrated. In addition to all of this, learning to MELT gives you control. Imagine experiencing low back pain, neck tension or knee pain and waiting to see a doctor, physical or manual therapist to help alleviate the pain. Once you learn to MELT and practice it regularly those aches and pains can be much less common or disappear completely. Plus, if you do experience discomfort or an injury, you’ll have the knowledge of what to do to help yourself relieve the tension or pain by helping your body get back into better balance.
