The Importance of Quality Sleep for Women in Their 50's and Beyond

Aug 14, 2024

We’ve all heard the phrase “I slept like a baby.” but as we know, babies don’t always sleep that well. As women enter their 50’s and beyond, sleep can become even more elusive due to the challenges of menopause and other factors. In this post, we’ll explore the top five reasons why quality sleep is crucial for women in our age group. I’m also providing five tips to help improve sleep during and after menopause.

Top Five Reasons We Need Quality Sleep in Our 50’s and Beyond

  1. Hormone regulation: Sleep helps regulate hormones that control appetite, metabolism, and mood.
  2. Cognitive function: Quality sleep is essential for memory consolidation, focus, and overall brain health.
  3. Physical health: Sleep is crucial for repairing tissues, boosting immune function, building muscle and maintaining a healthy weight.
  4. Emotional well-being: Adequate sleep helps reduce stress, anxiety, and depression.
  5. Energy levels: Quality sleep is necessary for maintaining daytime energy and vitality.

Top Six Tips to Improve Sleep in Menopause

  1. Establish a consistent sleep schedule: Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, even on weekends.
  2. Create a relaxing bedtime routine: Engage in calming activities like reading, taking a warm bath, enjoying a MELT Method sequence or meditation.
  3. Optimize your sleep environment: Keep your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet, and invest in a comfortable mattress and pillows.
  4. Limit caffeine and alcohol: Avoid consuming caffeine late in the day and limit alcohol intake, as both can disrupt sleep.
  5. Exercise regularly: Engage in moderate exercise during the day to promote better sleep at night but avoid vigorous exercise close to bedtime.
  6. Finish eating at least three hours before bed. This allows your autonomic nervous system to focus on sleep instead of digestion and helps prevent or minimize acid reflux from eating too close to lying down.

Who Struggles Most According to Research

Research shows that certain groups of women may be more prone to sleep difficulties during menopause and beyond, including those with:

  • Post-menopausal status
  • Restless Leg Syndrome
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Obstructive Sleep Apnea
  • Fibromyalgia
  • High BMI and abdominal obesity
  • Obesity
  • Gastrointestinal reflux
  • Vitamin D deficiency

Personal Anecdote: I keep a pretty regular sleep schedule. I’m by nature a morning person, and if you ask my man what happens after 7:30 in the evening, he’ll tell you I get sleepy, tired and maybe even a little cranky. My favorite evenings are eating an early dinner, going for a walk, spending15 minutes MELTing, followed by a shower then meditating. This routine has become my evening ritual, letting my body know I’m preparing for rest.

I share this with you not to tell you this is what you should do, but as an example that having a nighttime ritual helps our body know we’re preparing for rest. Research shows that as we move through menopause, it can become more difficult to fall and stay asleep. Being curious and noticing what helps you most can take a little detective work. But you’ll thank me when you’re sleeping more soundly and waking up feeling more rested.
