Weight Loss, Wellness and GLP-1: My Honest Take

Feb 05, 2025

I’ve been asked my opinion on GLP-1 medications several times. This blog post is my opinion. It is not meant in judgement if you are using pharmaceutical GLP-1, but as a health coach whose mission is to help you build a full life of longevity and vitality, I want to explain why I feel strongly that unless a person is in almost immediate danger we should all consider making lifestyle changes instead of, or before relying on pharmaceuticals.

Why I’m Suspicious of Major Drug Companies

Modern medicine saves lives. I am in 100% agreement. Without antibiotics and certain vaccines, surgeries and treatments our lifespan would be much shorter. My great-grandmother thought if she lived to 50 she would be old. She died in 1921 of pneumonia at 49 years old. I rode my bike up the Pyrenees for my 50th birthday in 2017. Less than 100 years later our lifespan and our health look very different

However, in my opinion, there is a place for medical intervention and a place where we have to do the mental and physical work to heal ourselves. Every synthetic drug has side effects. GLP-1’s are no different. Although a version of this drug has been used for years to treat type 2 diabetes, is using it to lose that nagging 40 or 50 pounds really the best for your future self?

In my opinion it is way too early to have a full understanding of what these drugs do to your gut and other organs and how that can impact the brain in the future. Besides, there are many people on GLP-1’s that are not adopting a healthy lifestyle along with the drug. Just losing weight may sound wonderful, but if you are losing muscle mass you are setting yourself up for illness, weakness and dysfunction.

When I work with my coaching clients, mental and emotional growth is just as important as building muscle, losing fat and reducing joint aches and pains. Becoming the person who is 30 pounds lighter is the process of how she will remain 30 lighter when we’re finished working together. It takes work, self-development and growth but the person on the other side is healthier, more content and able to catch whatever life throws at her. That my friends is true wellness.

GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) have shown significant benefits in treating diabetes and obesity, but recent research has also highlighted potential risks and side effects. Here's an overview of both the dangerous side effects and the positive aspects of natural GLP-1 production:

Dangerous Side Effects of GLP-1 RAs

Gastrointestinal Issues

GLP-1 RAs are associated with an increased risk of gastrointestinal adverse events, including:

- Biliary disease

- Pancreatitis

- Bowel obstruction

- Gastroparesis

Psychiatric Concerns

There have been reports of potential psychiatric adverse events associated with GLP-1 RAs, including:

- Suicidal ideation

- Depression

- Anxiety

However, more research is needed to establish a definitive link.

Other Serious Side Effects

- Acute gallstone disease

- Serious allergic reactions

- Potential thyroid cancer risk (though this requires further investigation)

Positive Aspects of Natural GLP-1 Production

While the research primarily focuses on the effects of GLP-1 RAs, there are benefits to stimulating the body's natural GLP-1 production:

Metabolic Benefits

- Improved insulin sensitivity

- Enhanced glucose metabolism

- Increased satiety, potentially aiding in weight management

Neuroprotective Effects

Natural GLP-1 has been shown to have neuroprotective properties, potentially benefiting conditions like:

- Alzheimer's disease

- Parkinson's disease

- Stroke

Cardiovascular Protection

Endogenous GLP-1 may help:

- Reduce blood pressure

- Improve microvascular function

- Decrease inflammation

While GLP-1 RAs have shown significant therapeutic potential, they also carry risks of serious side effects. Stimulating the body's natural GLP-1 production through lifestyle changes may offer some of the benefits without the associated risks of pharmaceutical interventions. However, more research is needed to fully understand the long-term effects and optimal approaches for harnessing the benefits of GLP-1.

Steps to Ignite your body’s own GLP-1 production and fat burning ability.

Foods That Boost GLP-1

  1. Leafy greens: Spinach, kale, and Swiss chard may increase GLP-1 secretion due to their high fiber content.
  2. Nuts and seeds: Almonds, chia seeds, and flaxseeds contain healthy fats and fiber that can stimulate GLP-1 production.
  3. Eggs: Rich in protein, eggs may help increase GLP-1 levels and promote satiety.
  4. Whole grains: Oats, barley, and quinoa are excellent sources of complex carbohydrates and fiber, potentially motivating the body to produce more GLP-1.
  5. Avocados: High in fiber and healthy fats, avocados may promote GLP-1 secretion.
  6. Fermented foods: Yogurt, kefir, and kimchi contain probiotics that support gut health and may boost GLP-1 secretion.
  7. Berries: Strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries are rich in antioxidants and fiber, which could help increase GLP-1 levels.
  8. Vegetables: Brussels sprouts, broccoli, and carrots are high in fiber and vitamins, potentially affecting GLP-1 levels.
  9. Olive oil: Contains unsaturated long-chain fatty acids that may lead to higher blood levels of GLP-1.
  10. Fish: Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, particularly DHA, which can increase GLP-1 and lower blood sugar.
  11. Pomegranates: Pomegranates are rich in antioxidants called polyphenols which can increase insulin sensitivity, reduce oxidative stress and help regulate appetite and blood sugar levels.

In Conclusion

Instead of relying on a drug with unknown long-term effects, consider investing in your overall well-being. True health is about more than just weight loss—it’s about strength, vitality, and feeling your best for years to come. Small, sustainable changes can have a powerful impact on your body and mind.
