The secret of getting strong

The Secret to Getting Strong After 50-It’s Not What You Think

October 29, 20253 min read

After almost 25 years of helping women get stronger, healthier, and more confident, I’ve learned one powerful truth: mindset determines everything.

You can have the perfect workout plan, the best nutrition strategy, or the latest wellness gadget, but if your mindset isn’t aligned, the results won’t last.

Everywhere we look, we’re sold quick fixes: diets, trends, injections, and “miracle” programs that promise overnight change. But here’s what I want you to know—you already carry the secret to success inside you.

As a health coach and movement specialist with decades of experience in personal training, Pilates, The MELT Method, and more, I’ve seen what truly creates transformation. It’s not about perfection. It’s not about willpower. It’s about mindset.

When you learn to master your mindset, everything else—your strength, your energy, your confidence—starts to fall into place.

The Three Mindset Shifts That Change Everything

There are three truths I share with every woman who joins my coaching programs or my Strong After 50 course. If you want real, sustainable results, these are your foundation.

1. Know Your North Star

When I first meet a new client, I always ask: “What do you want to achieve?”

Most women say things like:

“I want to lose weight.”

“I want to feel healthy.”

“I want to have more energy.”

Those are great goals, but they’re not your North Star. Your North Star is the why behind your goal. It’s what keeps you going when things get hard.

For example, my own North Star has two parts:

- I want to live independently for life—strong, mobile, and capable.

- I want to be the grandmother who hikes, plays, travels, and dances at her granddaughter’s wedding.

That vision pulls me forward far more powerfully than any number on a scale ever could.

So, ask yourself:

What’s your North Star?

Why do you want to feel strong, healthy, and confident?

When your “why” is clear, your actions begin to align naturally.

2. Discipline Over Motivation

Motivation is fleeting. Discipline is freedom.

We can’t wait to “feel motivated” to start—motivation comes after we take action, not before.

There are days I don’t feel like prepping meals, lifting weights, or getting my cardio in. But I do it anyway because I’ve built habits that keep me disciplined.

And here’s the magic: the more disciplined I am, the better I feel. The better I feel, the more motivated I become.

It’s a powerful cycle, but it starts with discipline, not desire.

If you’re a woman over 50 trying to rebuild your health, this mindset shift is everything. Discipline builds consistency, and consistency builds confidence.

3. Consistency Over Perfection

Perfectionism is just procrastination in disguise.

There will never be a perfect time, perfect schedule, or perfect plan. Life keeps lifing—and that’s okay.

The women who get the best results aren’t the ones who do everything perfectly. They’re the ones who keep showing up—even when it’s messy, even when it’s hard.

Progress, not perfection, is where transformation happens. And the woman you become along the way? That’s the real reward.

As Ferris Bueller said, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

So pause for a moment. Take a breath. And ask yourself—what’s your North Star?
