Living with Hashimoto’s: What Helps Women Over 50 Feel Strong, Calm, and Resilient Again

June 03, 20264 min read

Last year, I decided to begin working with a functional medicine doctor who specializes in women with Hashimoto’s and hypothyroidism. If you’ve been in my world for a while, you probably know I’ve been living with Hashimoto’s for over 30 years.

When I was younger, I didn’t spend much time thinking about everything autoimmunity could affect in the body. In some ways, that may have been a blessing. Because I never fully identified as “sick,” I kept searching for ways to become stronger, healthier, and more resilient instead.

And honestly, I think that matters more than we realize.

Because the stories we repeat to ourselves — and the identity we attach to — can shape the way we show up in our bodies and our lives. What your mind repeatedly accepts as true, your nervous system and body often begin responding to as well.

What Is Hashimoto’s and Why Does It Affect So Many Women?

Hashimoto’s is an autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks the thyroid gland. The thyroid is part of the endocrine system and plays a major role in regulating metabolism, energy, temperature, mood, digestion, and so much more. I often think of hormones as messengers, constantly communicating instructions throughout the body.

One important thing to understand is that when someone has one autoimmune condition, the likelihood of developing others can increase. That’s why supporting the body, calming inflammation, regulating stress, and building resilience become so important over time.

Other autoimmune conditions more commonly seen in women include rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, Sjögren’s syndrome, Graves’ disease, and multiple sclerosis.

So my question has always been:
How do I help my body — and yours — become as strong, supported, and resilient as possible, whether autoimmunity is part of the story or not?

Because I don’t believe the goal is simply “managing symptoms.”

I believe the goal is helping women feel at home in their bodies again.

Why Blood Sugar Balance Matters for Autoimmune Health

One of the biggest pieces is balancing blood sugar.

When blood sugar constantly spikes and crashes, the body can begin to feel like it’s living in a constant stress response. You may notice it showing up as fatigue, cravings, anxiety, irritability, disrupted sleep, inflammation, or waking around 3 or 4 a.m. unable to fully settle back to sleep.

Sometimes women assume something is “wrong” with them, when in reality their body may simply be asking for more stability and support.

Building Muscle After 50 Supports More Than Strength

Building muscle matters too.

And I don’t mean becoming a bodybuilder. I mean building the kind of strength that helps you feel capable, steady, confident, and supported in your everyday life.

Muscle is about so much more than appearance. It supports blood sugar regulation, bone density, metabolism, joint stability, mobility, balance, and healthy aging. It helps your body become more resilient and adaptable over time.

And there’s something powerful that happens mentally when women begin feeling physically stronger again.

You begin trusting your body differently.

How Stress and Nervous System Dysregulation Affect the Body

Regulating the nervous system is another huge piece.

Many women are operating with stress levels their bodies were never designed to sustain long term. Constant rushing, caregiving, pushing through exhaustion, overthinking, poor sleep, emotional stress — eventually the body begins speaking up.

Sometimes through tension.
Sometimes through inflammation.
Sometimes through fatigue, pain, anxiety, or feeling disconnected from yourself.

Why Recovery and Regulation Matter More As We Age

That’s why things like breathwork, The MELT Method®, sleep, recovery, connection, and moments of calm aren’t luxuries. They’re part of helping the body feel safe enough to heal and recover.

The Role Mindset Plays in Long-Term Health and Healing

Mindset is the final piece, and honestly, I think it’s one of the most powerful.

This is part of the deeper work we do inside my 6 Pillars of Wellness private coaching. Because your mindset influences your habits, your consistency, your resilience, and the choices you make every single day.

You absolutely can become stronger, healthier, calmer, and more vibrant in your 50s, 60s, 70s, and beyond.

But it doesn’t happen by accident.

It happens through intentional choices repeated consistently over time and healing the belief systems that hold you back.

Small Daily Habits Create Lasting Change

And if all of this feels overwhelming right now, don’t make the mistake of thinking you need to change everything overnight.

Start with one thing.

One supportive habit.
One nourishing choice.
One small commitment your future self will thank you for.

Because often the women who create the most lasting transformation aren’t the women who do everything perfectly.

They’re the women who choose themselves and make consistent changes every day.

If you’re ready to step into your next chapter as your healthiest, strongest, and most vibrant self, I’d love to support you.
